Malcolm. It's all his fault.
I've known Malcs since we were schoolkids. We've both always been car daft - mainly VWs, but various Audis along the way. Throughout the years Malcs has had loads of different Beetles, including a '63 Norwegian one that now sits in a carcoon, looking like a giant Matchbox toy. That one has been completely restored and looks really good. He's also restoring a 63 Porsche 356 at the moment, the sort of car dreams are made of, but he's ginger, so that always makes me feel better.
Anyway, every time I used to see him at his folks' farm, I would look at this rolling shell of a '64 blue Beetle and ask whether they would ever sell it. there was always a look skyward followed by a 'hmmmmmm'. It wasn't until about 6 months later that my new, very old car appeared towed by Malc's brother (driving a Land Rover Disco - not on foot, although he is a strong lad!). We took it to my Aunt's house, where it was for many years (8 years). then it was in Newcastle at Jay's Bugshop (2.5 years) and now it's up at the farm (1year!).
